Smith And Wesson 38 Chiefs Special Serial Number Lookup
I have a S&W.38 Safety Hammerless that belonged to my grandfather with a serial number Y89XX. I have not had any luck finding the 'Y' prefix anywhere. Cany anyone help me out with this?Since this gun was used in his job I was wondering if any of you have heard of the organization he worked for, the International Bureau of Investigations. I have his badge with this on it along with 'IBI', 'Special Agent' and his agent number. I believe he work for this organization through the 20's and 30's.Thank you. Hi melody font download. Hi JLJ.welcome to TFF.This is a bit of a puzzler. The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson doesn't list any serial numbers with the prefix 'Y'.The.38 Safety Hammerless, commonly known as the 'Lemon Squeezer due to it's grip safety, was made with serial #s 1 thru 261493 between 1887 and 1940.If we disregard the 'Y' in the serial #, your #89xx is a 2nd Model Safety Hammerless, made between 1887 and 1890.The caliber is.38 Smith & Wesson ( not.38 Special).BTW, the IBI is a private detective & security firm located in Ocala, FL, and is still in business today. The Firearms Forum is on online community for all gun enthusiasts.
